Password Generator guide
Reused and easy-to-guess passwords are how most accounts get broken into. This generator creates random passwords using your browser's built-in cryptographic random number generator, so they are unpredictable, and they are never sent anywhere.
Choosing the options
- Length. 15 characters by default. Every extra character multiplies the number of possible passwords, so length matters more than anything else. Use at least 12, and 16 or more for email, banking, and password manager accounts.
- Character types. Uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols such as ! @ # $ % and brackets. Keep all four on unless a site rejects symbols.
After changing the options, click Generate Password to get a new one.
How strong is it?
With all four character types there are 92 possible characters per position. A 16-character password then has over 100 bits of randomness, which is far beyond what any attacker can brute-force.
Each character is picked independently, so a password can occasionally miss one of the selected types. If a site insists on at least one of each, generate again.
Keeping it safe
Use a different password for every site and keep them in a password manager rather than a note or a spreadsheet. Nothing is saved here: reload the page and the password is gone.
